Good advice–and a bit of BDSM–from Montaigne

Good old Montaigne!

"To have my opinions contradicted doesn’t offend or harm me; instead it wakes me up and challenges me...I don’t mind being rudely attacked by my friends (You’re a fool, you’re dreaming). Among gallant men, a person should express himself boldly, letting his words go where his thought does. I like a strong and virile friendship, which prides itself on the acerbity and vigor of its conversation, as love prides itself on bites and bloody scratches. When someone contradicts me, he attracts my attention, not my anger; I feel drawn toward the person who contradicts me, who instructs me, and I love to gratify and nourish his liberty to warn me of my mistakes by my easy surrender; yes, even at my own expense."
